How to read a job description before you apply

Start with five things: what you would actually do, which requirements are essential, the pay and contract terms, where and when you would work, and whether the employer and application route appear genuine.

1. Identify the job’s real purpose

Write the role’s main outcome in one sentence. If you cannot, the description may be too vague to assess.

2. Separate essential from preferred requirements

Do not assume every bullet has equal weight. Record what appears necessary on day one and what could be learned.

3. Check the terms

Note pay, contract, hours, location, remote eligibility, travel, and closing date. Treat missing information as a question, not a fact.

4. Check the employer and application route

Look for a consistent employer identity and a working application destination. Be cautious about fees or requests for sensitive information before you can verify who will receive it.

Apply, save, ask a question, or skip the role. Keep a short note explaining your choice.
